Visiting your first Toastmasters meeting is easier than people expect. Here's what to know.
You don't have to:
- Give a speech
- Sign up for anything
- Pay anything
- Bring anything
- Commit to coming back
You'll probably want to:
- Arrive 10 minutes early. Most clubs do introductions for guests at the top of the meeting.
- Wear what you'd wear to that club's setting. Workplace clubs lean business-casual; community clubs are usually whatever you're comfortable in.
- Bring a notebook. You'll want to jot down speakers' techniques you liked, evaluator feedback you found sharp, and any questions for the people who introduced themselves to you.
What will happen:
- The President will greet you at the door and probably ask your name + how you heard about the club.
- Early in the meeting, the Toastmaster will invite you to stand up and introduce yourself (30-60 seconds is plenty).
- You may be offered a turn at Table Topics (1-2 minutes of impromptu speaking on a prompt). Politely decline if you'd rather just observe — it's no big deal.
- At the end, the President will invite feedback. Honest impressions are welcome.
Stay for the whole meeting.
The evaluations at the end are often the most useful part of the meeting — that's where you'll see how Toastmasters teaches feedback. Don't leave early just because the prepared speeches are over.
